$4.7 Billion Verdict Against Johnson & Johnson For Cancer Causing Baby Powder Upheld By Trial Court
Declaring that Johnson & Johnson's "reprehensible conduct" warranted punitive damages, a St. Louis trial Judge yesterday refused to reduce or set aside a jury verdict of $4.7 billion awarded to 22 women who developed ovarian cancer due to talcum baby powder. The Judge stated that J & J "knew of the presence of asbestos in products that they knowingly targeted for sale to mothers and babies, knew of the damages their products caused [including causing ovarian cancer], and misrepresented the safety of these products for decades." J & J continues to insist there is no credible evidence that its baby powder causes ovarian cancer.
This ruling will surely be appealed but the value of the thousands of claims of similar injuries against J & J elsewhere in the U.S., has just gone up.
