Attorney Owes $7.9M & Jail Time For Fraudulent Billing
A former Wilkie & Gallagher partner, Keila Ravelo, age 51, is looking at 4 - 6 years jail time after pleading guilty last week of creating phony invoices for imaginary litigation vendors created to establish corporate bank accounts. She would send the phony bills to her law firm clients and they sent payment to her payable to the fake corporate vendor. Ms. Ravelo then withdrew funds from the fake corporate bank accounts for personal expenses and investments.
Ms. Ravelo pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and tax evasion. A Federal Court in Newark, New Jersey ordered her to pay $7,900,000 in restitution. An attorney for Ms.Ravelo explained that she deeply regrets getting caught up in this scheme she claims was masterminded by her now estranged husband. They have two college aged sons.
