New Study Shows Red Light Cameras Save Lives
According to a report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on July 28, 2016, red light camera programs in 79 large U.S. cities saved almost 1300 lives through 2014. Because of their unpopularity, those municipalities that abolished the red light camera program saw a 30 % increase in fatal red-light-running crashes. The report also showed that in those cities that adopted a red light camera program there were 21 % fewer fatal red light running accidents.
There may be a novel liability theory available (against a municipality) to someone injured by a motorist who ran a red light at an intersection that once had a red light camera which was subsequently removed.
