Saudi Arabia Moves To Dismiss 25 Lawsuits Concerning 9/11 Attack
According to Reuters, yesterday Saudi Arabia asked a federal court Judge to dismiss 25 lawsuits claiming it aided and abetted the attacks of September 11, 2011. Though a U.S. government commission found no evidence of a direct link between Saudi Arabia and al Qaeda, it "left open whether individual officials from Saudi Arabia might have". Moreover, 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.
In September, 2016 Congress passed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act act which allows these 25 lawsuits to proceed. According to Reuters, "Saudi Arabia is being sued for billions of dollars by the families of roughly 2,500 of those killed, more than 20,000 people who suffered injuries, businesses and various insurers." A decision on Saudi Arabia's motion to dismiss is pending.
