$140M Awarded to 255 Patients of Orthopedic Surgeon
On February 21, 2019 the New York Law Journal reported that 255 patients of an orthopedic surgeon from Poughkeepsie, Spyros Panos were awarded an aggregate of $140 million for claims related to unnecessary surgeries and lack of proper treatment. The 255 lawsuits were pulled from the Court system and placed before a single arbitrator, Peter Skelos. Dr. Panos surrendered his medical license in 2013 after being charged with practicing medicine fraudulently. He was found guilty of health care fraud and served two and a half years in prison.
According to one of the attorney's involved, the individual awards range from $15,500 and $3.8 million. However, given the limited malpractice insurance coverage the amount each victim will collect is likely to be much less.
