COVID Suit Against McDonald's Claims Workers Given Face Masks Made Out of Dog Diapers
It was reported in Law 360 today that five employees of a McDonald's franchise in Oakland, California tested positive for COVID-19 and filed suit "alleging the franchise's owners forced highly contagious workers who had contracted the virus to keep working and gave workers face masks made from dog diapers." It was also reported that: "Despite knowing employees had tested positive...the defendants refused to close the restaurant, institute cleaning protocols or other precautionary measures, or give workers sick leave, which prompted the employees to go on strike...." The suit claims the COVID outbreak is "directly attributable to defendants' cold-hearted economic decision in May 2020 to ignore substantial, inescapable evidence of rising infection levels among workers."
A similar claim was filed against McDonald's locations in the Chicago area last month claiming inadequate safety standards put the public at risk. McDonald's has defended itself claiming that it has distributed over 100 million masks to workers and instituted rigorous safety & cleaning protocols.
